Architecture Transformed
A History of the Photography of Buildings from 1839 to the Present
by Cervin Robinson and Joel Herschman
MIT Press, 1986
Comments: This book is a somewhat scholarly account of the history and practitioners of architectural photography from its early beginnings until as recently as 1986. It's richly illustrated with large, high-quality, toned reproductions of some of the best work of that period. It provides basic information about virtually all the photographers important to the evolution of the genre. The presentation is essentially in timeline form, where the various intersecting influences of both culture and craft can be easily associated. The historical narrative is relatively succinct, but coherent and insightful. The photography is first-rate and the large format of the book makes it absolutely fascinating to browse and study. For anyone interested in the topic, this beautiful book is well worth finding.
