Nature
by Ralph Waldo Emerson
Beacon Press, 1989
Comments: Not many softcover books make my favorites list, but this one is an exception. It's a facsimile edition of Emerson's landmark book Nature. This is perhaps the most important work by a great American thinker and writer, presenting Emerson's core ideas on transcendentalism. There is, of course, a new introduction by a pertinent Emerson scholar, but the main section of the book is a typographic replica of the original edition published in 1836. Aside from the fact that Emerson's ideas were pioneering and inspirational, the historic impact of the work is enhanced by the classic character of the typesetting. If you're looking for a light, portable edition of this weighty work, then this is the version to find.
